Candid City's debut exhibition at Foreign Lens Gallery in North Beach, San Francisco opened on May 5th, 2023 and ran though June 2023.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Founded in 2022, Candid City is a collective of four San Francisco-based street photographers – Christine Kemp, Gerald Gutschmidt, Tony Van Le, and Anthony O’Donnell. This show is our debut exhibition. All of the photos featured are candid public photographs taken in San Francisco.

Street photography is a genre of photography that records everyday life in a public place. It is unposed and honest, although at times life is stranger than fiction! Street photography allows us to capture the essence of real life and add to a historical record. At the same time, it questions reality and demonstrates that there is more to life than it seems.

San Francisco is a multifaceted city full of contradictions. These photos capture an evolving city, at times beautiful, magical, ugly, or sad. In addition to capturing San Francisco’s people, we observe the architecture, the light, the weather, the culture, and the celebrations. We find documenting the city and its kaleidoscope of diversity to be life-affirming.

These photos are our love letter to the city. We hope in viewing this show, you might realize that serendipitous moments are happening all around you.
