A Great Divide - by Edwin Carungay

This project captures a flash – of beloved, community-led celebrations from inside Oaxaca’s communities of Santo Tomás Jalieza, San Martín Tilcajete, Zaachila, San Juan Chilateca and Teotitlán del Valle. This unique time of each year illuminates the buoyant fellowship and revere of impassioned faith – mostly missing, has been lost, or never existed north of México's border. From sunrise to sunset, the most unique, color-filled acts of devotion, and/or rebellion blissfully overtakes each of these communities.​​​​​​​

These photographs document Pre-Lenten celebrations, and Lent Carnavales – from late February and early March of 2019 and 2023.
